Question: The guyabano fruit is a natural cancer cell killer that is 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy. Is this true?
Answer: That the guyabano has anti-cancer properties is one gross misinformation that has been circulating in the Internet for years now. More than two years ago, I was sent an email by a cancer-survivor friend of mine who attributes her survival from breast cancer to her regular intake of guyabano juice. About eight years earlier, she was diagnosed with stage I cancer of the breast for which she underwent surgery and chemotherapy. She started drinking guyabano juice after her chemotherapy and has since credited the fruit, rather than her doctors, for her apparent cure.
When I received her email, out of curiosity, I did a library and Internet search for guyabano. I was amazed with what I found out and wrote an article, which was later published in this column, about the alleged “miraculous properties” of guyabano. Nothing much has changed regarding this issue since, so most of what I am going to write herewith I have told readers before.
Guyabano is the Filipino term for the graviola tree (Annona reticulate). Its delectable fruitis also locally referred to as guyabano but is known as custard apple or sour sop in English.
Folklore attributes some medicinal properties to guyabano. Supposedly, its unripe fruit can relieve diarrhea, its leaves can eliminate worms when taken internally and heal wounds when applied topically, and a concoction of its roots can reduce fever.
Traditional medicine does not ascribe anti-cancer properties to guyabano but there are numerous web sites that promote graviola as an anti-cancer remedy. Of course, most of these web sites also promote the graviola supplements made from roots, stems and fruits of the tree that they sell. There are web sites that claim that guyabano is 10,000 times stronger than the Adriamycin, a drug which is used in the chemotherapy for breast and other forms of cancer. But, the numerous evidence that these websites present to support their claim are mostly anecdotal and pseudoscientific in nature. Simply put, there is no scientific evidence that proves that guyabano has anti-cancer properties.
The idea that graviola is an effective cancer fighter evidently stems from research (published in 2008) conducted at the Purdue University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences on the unique substances known as annonaceousacetogenins that have been extracted from the graviola tree. The Purdue investigators found these substances to be potent inhibitors of cancer cells while leaving normal cells alone. They also found the compounds to be effective against drug-resistant cancer cells.
But these studies were conducted in vitro, i.e., conducted on cancer cells in test tubes. These are a long way from clinical trials that determine the efficacy and safety of these compounds in people with cancer. In fact, I have not found any human study on graviola and cancer.
As to the suggestion, by some of the websites, that scientific evidence in favor of graviola is being suppressed by drug corporations, I find this inconceivable. I’m more inclined to believe that this conspiracy theory has been concocted by those who sell graviola supplements. In fact, if these business entities that manufacture and sell supplements want to, they can easily undertake scientifically acceptable research on guyabano and publish their findings. But they don’t. Instead, they label their products as having “no therapeutic claims” while at the same time they try to make the public believe that they are actually effective and even better than proprietary medicines.

Miracle Tropical Fruit of GUYABANO |
A scientific research in 1976 shows that one chemical is 10,000 times more potent then the chemotherapeutic drug Adriamycin.
Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections. Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment. Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life.
The source of this information is just as stunning. With many laboratory tests conducted since the 1970’s, those tests revealed was nothing short of mind numbing.
Extracts from the tree were shown to: Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer.
The tree compounds proved to be up to stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug!
What’s more, unlike chemotherapy, laboratory tests shows that the compound extracted from the Guyabano tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells. It does not harm healthy cells! Various parts of the tree–including the bark, leaves, roots, fruit and fruit-seeds–have been used for centuries by medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis.
The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific research in 1976. The results showed that Guyabano’s “leaves and stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant cells.
Since 1976, laboratory tests has proven that Guyabano to be an immensely potent cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests. A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, stated that one chemical in Guyabano (Annona Muricata) was found to selectively kill colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of (the commonly used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin.
The most significant part of the report is that Guyabano (Annona Muricata) was shown to selectively target the cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy, which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.
A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from the Guyabano tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and lung cancers.
Guyabano, guyabano or soursop in English (Anona muricata Linn.) is a small tree about 5 to 7 meters in height. The leaves are alternate, oval in shape, pointed at both ends, smooth and shinning, 7 to 20 centimeters long and with petioles about 5 millimeters long. The flowers are large, yellowish or greenish yellow and solitary. There are six large, freshy or leathery petals in two series. They are heart-shaped, with pointed tip, and up to 5 centimeters in legth and 3 centimeters in breadth. In the center of the flower is a cone-shaped mass of many carpels which will form the fruit, and below this are very numerous stamens. A native of tropical America, was introduced into the Philippines at an early date and is now cultivated in all parts of the Archipelago.
Guayabano is a green, soft spine, pear-shaped fruit with a sweet-sour flavor. It weighs about two to five kilos. The skin is thin and its flesh is a white, soft fibrous pulp which has a very agreeable flavor but rather sour. Its mature, green fruit is used as vegetable and made into sweet meat, while the ripe fruit is eaten raw or for dessert.
A lot of concoctions can be made into guayabano like delicious sherbets, ice drops and fruit drinks. An assortment of punch and cocktail drinks can be made by mixing the nectar with wine rum or cola drinks or buko (fresh coconut) juice and ice. There are two strains of guyabano: the sweet and the ordinary. Both have the same botanic description. The former, however, tastes sweeter than the ordinary. ###
indeed, there is no systematic study being done on the effectiveness of guyabano as a cancer killer, but i personally know of a person who stopped all his medicines after being told by his doctor that his cancer has reached stage four despite years of chemotherapies and what nots. all he did was eat this fruit and in six months time was said to have no more evidence of cancer. now, isn't that worth looking into? send me your comments at tutsparadela@gmail.com.
ReplyDeletetry guyabano leaves, air dry and make it a tea.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeletemy husband is a taxi driver for over 10 years, he develops back pain and rheumatism, arthritis and stomach trouble because of constant eating in restaurants. There were times he couldn't get off from his taxi due to severe pain caused by his arthritis, I was fed up buying medicines that can't even lessen the pain. He couldn't walk for 2 weeks. This time I was thinking of any herbal/home remedies due to his stomach pain every time he takes medicine for arthritis. I found guyabano interesting, since we got that tree around our house, i tried drying its leaves, boil and let him drink trice a day...you can't believe how good it was..for just 2 days all pain had gone. Now, we plan to take it as his maintenance since he got HB pressure as well. I tried this for my swing mood and it was so excellent. Medicine are too expensive why not try this helpful tree at very low cost and even free if you got one in your back yard. Try....so good.
Hi,
ReplyDeletemy mother is suffering from tongue cancer. She's already drinking and eating guyabano for a month. I don't know if there are changes because she still cannot speak and eat well. Please help..
@ miss feia ---> thanks for your comment. however, guyabano fruit as well as the tea has only been considered to aid the battle against cancer. my uncle unfortunately didn't survive the fight but we're so grateful to GOD that my dearest uncle is now with our Almighty Father for he has suffered much. But this miracle fruit has helped him in many ways.
ReplyDeleteI hope and pray that your mother wins the battle and gets totally healed. By the way, Dok Alternatibo has given my uncle therapies and wonders. You may want to know more about them. GOD bless and will really pray for your mom. :-)
I have a friend's husband tried the tea made from the branch chips of the guyabano tree for six months. His tumours in the lungs cleared up.
ReplyDeleteGuyabano can really cure cancer. But it cannot beat cancer alone. Lifestyle change must be done also. Avoid foods that can trigger cancer cells such as sugar, meat and processed food. Eating organic food as much as possible.. If you do this you will definitely win the battle against cancer..
ReplyDeleteThanks for views and experiences Tom and Joanne!
