Tragic Death of a Kid at the Pittsburgh Zoo

I was on my search as to what I should blog about today until I have come across yahoo.com.ph - seeing a news about this two-year old kid who was killed at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Then, I got so interested in knowing the details and finding why this had happened.

Here are the recent news and posts about the said tragedy:

An outing to the Pittsburgh Zoo turned into tragedy on Sunday when a woman put her young son on top of a railing so he could get a better look at some wild African dogs.

Officials are still trying to piece together exactly what happened, but the mother apparently stood her son up on top of a wooden railing over the pen and was unable to catch him when he lost his balance. He fell 12-14 feet into the enclosure and was immediately attacked by the animals–sometimes called African Painted Dogs–as he lay prone. Police say they are awaiting an autopsy to verify whether the boy died on impact or if his death was caused by the mauling.

The animals–11 in all–were reigned in by zoo keepers except for one, which was so aggressive it had to be put down on the spot. Bystanders said they heard screams and the shots that rang out when that animal was killed, and describe it as a horrible tragedy.

“They are one of the most aggressive predatory animals in the wild,” animal expert Jack Hanna said. “I don’t care if a zookeeper, a policeman, a tranquilizer gun, whatever would have been right there, could not have helped. Sorry is not a word that I can even say…I don’t know what word to use. Just, my heart aches for everybody.”

2-Year-Old Dies In Pittsburgh Zoo's Wild Dog Exhibit
by The Associated Press

A mother's attempt to give her two-year-old son a better view of wild African dogs turned into a "horrific" tragedy at the Pittsburgh Zoo after the boy fell into the exhibit and was attacked by a pack of the animals as relatives and bystanders looked on.

Lt. Kevin Kraus of the Pittsburgh police said the attack happened at about 11:45 a.m. Sunday after the mother picked the child up and put him on top of a railing at the edge of a viewing deck. "Almost immediately after that he lost his balance, fell down off the railing into the pit, and he was immediately attacked by 11 dogs," Kraus said. "It was very horrific."

It's not yet clear whether the boy died from the fall or the attack, said Barbara Baker, president of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Zoo officials at first estimated the boy fell 14 feet, but police said it was 11. It's not clear which is correct.

Authorities said that zoo staff and then police responded "within minutes" but visitors described that time as being filled with screams for help. Zookeepers called off some of the dogs, and seven of them immediately went to a back building. Three more eventually were drawn away from the child, but the last dog was aggressive and police had to shoot the animal.

Experts said the death is highly unusual.

Steve Feldman, a spokesman for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, said no one he's spoken to can recall any deaths of children at an accredited zoo over the last 40 years or more. Feldman said the Pittsburgh Zoo successfully completed its 5-year review in September, which means it meets or exceeds all safety standards.

Authorities didn't release the name of the boy or his mother, but say she is 34 years old and lives in Pleasant Hills, just outside Pittsburgh. The boy's father arrived on the scene soon after the accident, police said.

The zoo was immediately closed, and it was not clear when it will reopen, authorities said.

The so-called painted dogs are about as big as medium-sized domestic dogs, and 37 to 80 pounds, according to the zoo. They have large, rounded ears and dark brown circles around their eyes and are considered endangered.

The attack happened in a 1.5 acre exhibit called the Painted Dog Bush Camp that's part of a larger open area where elephants, lions and other animals can be seen. Visitors walk onto a deck that is glassed on the sides, but open in front where the roughly four-foot railing is located.

In May, some of the dogs crawled under a fence and escaped into a part of the exhibit that's usually closed. The zoo was on lockdown for about an hour as a precaution.

Women Empowerment 101 - Loving Yourself More

I was browsing the newspaper this morning when I came across an article about empowering oneself written by Ms. Cory Quirino. And here's what she has in mind:

Empowering yourself
By Cory Quirino

There are simple and practical steps that can have a profound effect on your well-being.

Let’s wire or rewire the brain by programming ourselves.  We all know that no change is ever possible unless the mind accepts it as truth.  What are your truths?  It’s time to analyze your belief system.

Many people might be lazy and resistant to change simply because they feel that it requires hard work.  Or, that it translates to giving up the things they enjoy the most.  A classic example is Elena, a housewife saddled with three kids who  wishes she could lose another 10 lbs.

The idea of exercising in the morning after everyone is out of the house is overpowered by the need to rest.  So, for her the choice is either the gym or the bed.  We know which way this is going, right?  And yet, Elena grows more dissatisfied with herself as time passes.  Eventually her displeasure  will deteriorate into low self-esteem and depression.  With these come the need to self-indulge with overeating.  It’s a vicious cycle.

What Elena needs to understand is that the root cause of her problems is herself—her indecisiveness and lack of perseverance stem from the inability to believe.  She needs to love herself more.

To Elena and many like her, I advise:

1.  Practice self-love. Don’t be in denial of your own needs.  Be honest with yourself.

2. Prioritize.  Make a wish list of the things you want to happen in your life.

3. Practice “me” time. That’s right.  Declare a specific day or time of the week to focus on you and your wish list.  Make it happen.

Our minds are so powerful that reality begins from our thoughts.  So if we think it, then the probability is high that it  will happen.

Under control
A complete sense of being empowered is the knowledge that you and I have every situation under control.  And that’s a good thing.  So let’s explore some control measures that we can do everyday.

The focus is on prevention.  There are many lifestyle and behavioral changes that we can make starting today.

Reduce food intake.  Restrict calories sourced from refined and processed foods. Overeating is a no-no.

Increase exercise.  By  doing so you avoid weight gain and obesity.  Exercise plays a pivotal role in lowering the risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer by 23 percent if females exercise regularly between the ages of 12 and 35 years.

There is an urgent need to train children early on in life. The only real way to combat diabetes and obesity is to exercise.

Don’t smoke.
Take the right vitamin and  mineral supplements.
Learn and regularly practice stress management techniques.
Give yourself enough rest and sleep time.

Do you know that…
The risk of lifestyle diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses can be dramatically reduced with an adequate intake of fruits and vegetables.  These foods are rich in phytonutrients that help prevent cancers of the lungs, breast, colon and prostate.

High flavonoid foods like tea, chocolate, onions, garlic and moringa may lower the risk of heart disease by 20 percent.

The nutrient lutein (a carotenoid pigment in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables) can help prevent macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in adults.  A daily habit would be to include sweet potatoes, squash and carrots in your meal plan.

B complex vitamins can reduce the amino acid homocysteine in the body, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.  With B3, B12 and folic acid therapy, there can be a 16-24 percent lowering of risks.

Selenium combined with vitamin D and fish oil may significantly reduce the dangers of developing prostate cancer.  Be aware, gentlemen.

Juice it
Do you truly want to have a more energetic, slimmer body? Is it your dream to have a glowing complexion?  Would you like to start a detoxification program?  Here is my wellness advice.

Start practicing the habit of drinking fresh, natural and, if possible, organic fruit and vegetable juices.

When taken raw and unexposed to heat, juices are packed with enzymes that directly nourish our cells.

Must do:  Drink healthy by going green and rainbow colors.

Invest in a good juicer.  If you have no juicer, try a blender.  But the downside of a blender is that the end result is mashed food.  You need to extract the greatest amount of live enzymes in a slow and no-heat manner.

One of the best juice extractors most nutritionists recommend is the Hurom Slow Juicer which uses the patented low-speed technology system (call Hurom at tel. 0917-8108822 or 9267782).

Trivia:  Vitamin C is especially sensitive to heat.  And this is why, while a cup of hot calamansi juice may be soothing to the throat, it has no vitamin benefits.  With the proper juicer, you can juice fruit even with the skin and tiny seeds intact.  This is great news for health buffs indeed.

Happy reading! To all my fellow women, wives and mothers out there, let us love ourselves more by pampering oneself and giving quality time to our needs. Indulge, fellas! Hugs.

PEDRO CALUNGSOD – The Second Filipino Saint

PEDRO CALUNGSOD – The Second Filipino Saint

Blessed Pedro Calungsod’s long journey to sainthood will finally come to its end on October 21 – twelve years after his beatification and 340 years after his death. This celebration has also been the much-awaited day when the second Filipino, after San Lorenzo Ruiz, will be canonized in Rome as per the official statement of Pope Benedict XVI at Saint Peter’s Basilica on February 18.

He was a young man from Visayas – a catechist, a mission assistant, a sacristan, and a martyr. When he was sent to Guam in 1672, along with other Jesuit missionaries, they were tasked to build chapels to encourage the natives to convert to Christianity. They experienced hostility and resentment for spreading their faith, but they were really committed to their mission even if that would mean sacrificing their own lives. They also suffered from religious persecution and martyrdom for their missionary works.

Calungsod is often illustrated as a young man wearing camisa de chino. He holds the martyr’s palm that indicates his death, or sometimes a crucifix, catechism book or rosary that represents his mission.
The Roman Catholic calendar of Martyrology celebrates his feast along with Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores every 2nd day of April.

For more details about his life, works and martyrdom, feel free to visit www.pedrocalungsod.org.
