Kritika Kultura Celebrates International Translation Day

Every September 30, the world’s translation community celebrates International Translation Day. This year, once again in many countries, solidarity will be shown worldwide through programs and events that highlight the significance of translation as a profession and recognize the key role translation scholarship plays in today’s globalizing world.

Kritika Kultura, the internationally refereed online journal of the Ateneo de Manila English Department, and the Organizing Committee for the Philippine Society for Translation and Translation Studies (PSTTS), shall spearhead the effort to commemorate the event this year with a poetry reading of esteemed faculty members, authors and administrators of the Ateneo de Manila University’s Loyola Schools. 

They will read a favorite poem in the original language and in translation and will share brief remarks on its translation. The event is entitled "Traveling Texts: Poetic Passages.”

The event will be held on October 1, 2012, Monday, 4.30-6:30pm, at Escaler Hall, Ateneo de Manila University Loyola Heights campus. As of this writing, confirmed participants include Maria Luz C. Vilches (Dean, School of Humanities), Eduardo Jose E. Calasanz, Jr. (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs), Hiroko Yabut (Director, Japanese Studies Program), Daisy See (Director, Chinese Studies Program), Alvin Yapan (Chair, Filipino Department), Heidi V. Aquino (Chair, Modern Languages Department), Christa R. Velasco (Modern Languages Department), Assunta Cuyegkeng, Toby Dayrit (Chemistry Department), Francis Gealogo (History Department), Jose Mario Francisco, S. J.  (Loyola School of Theology), Agustin Rodriguez (Chair, Philosophy Department), and Cori Perez, Louie Jon Sanchez, Mary Thomas (English Department). 

As planned, the poems are originally in French, Waray, Japanese, Chinese, Bikol, Spanish, German, Ilokano, Gaelic, English, Tagalog, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian.

PSTTS is envisioned to be a non-profit organization that shall encourage research in translation, interpretation and translation studies, as well as promote the education, professionalization, and training of translators, interpreters and researchers and scholars of translation studies. 

It will convene in the first quarter of 2013 in a one-day program to be firmed up by the organizing committee whose members are Dr. Maria Luisa T. Reyes (English Department), Dr. Remmon Barbaza (Philosophy Department) and Dr. Michael Coroza (Filipino Department).  In this program, the organization shall be formalized and committees shall be constituted in order to realize the articulated aims of the PSTTS.

Attending the First KK International Conference

Towards my personal journey to professional growth, I will attend to this international conference on Text Translation, to be held at the Ateneo de Manila University on August 31, 2012.

KRITIKA KULTURA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE MOVED TO AUG. 31, 2012

The Kritika Kultura International Conference (KKIC) on translation and globalization originally slated on August 10-11, 2012, and which was consequently postponed due to the relentless rains in the Metro, is moved to August 31, 2012.

This was announced by the committee after August 10’s special Kritika Kultura Lecture Series featuring KKIC Keynote Speaker Dr. Vicente Rafael, at the Natividad Galang Fajardo Lecture Room, De La Costa Hall, Ateneo de Manila University. The forum where Rafael delivered his keynote lecture, “Targeting Translation: US Counterinsurgency and the Weaponization of Speech,” was attended by many scholars and academics, mostly invited speakers of KKIC who showed their continued support of the conference.

Participants who pre-registered or who have paid for their registration through Metrobank are requested to reconfirm their attendance as the Secretariat will make a final headcount. Reconfirmation may be sent to kritikakulturaconference@yahoo.com on or before August 15, 2012.

Late registrants may also enlist but are not assured of a conference kit.

First KK International Conference


To mark its tenth year, Kritika Kultura, the international e-journal of language, literary and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University, will hold on August 10-11, 2012 (now moved to August 31,Friday), the first-ever Kritika Kultura International Conference series, delving on the subject of translation and globalization.

With the theme “Traveling Texts: Translation and Globalization,” the conference will gather top translation practitioners and scholars from here and abroad. Among the more important aspects of translation and translation studies to be discussed are translation and its imperial connections; translation in a cultural context; translation as a form of research; translation in the curriculum and the classroom; and translation as creative practice. The issues and themes to be addressed in the conference are inextricably linked to the nationwide adoption of the mother tongue based multilingual education paradigm (MLE), as well as the increasing internationalization of higher education worldwide.

Confirmed keynote speakers are Dr. Vicente Rafael of the University of Washington at Seattle, and Dr. Harry Aveling of the Monash University, Australia. Dr. Rafael is the scholar behind the highly acclaimed books Contracting Colonialism: Translation and Christian Conversion in Tagalog Society Under Early Spanish Rule and The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines. Dr. Aveling on the other hand is a Professor in the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics in Monash. He specialises in Indonesian and Malay Literature, and Translation Studies. He is among the best published English translators of Indonesian and Malaysian literary works.

The conference charges a minimal amount of P500, to cover hand outs and certificates, and wishes to touch base with as many academics and teachers as possible, especially those whose institutions or systems have adopted MLE and colleges and universities cognizant of the need to develop a global outlook in higher education. Plenary talks on translation in the classroom, and translation as scholarship are especially organized to address these pressing concerns.
